Pilates – What is this, you ask?

Moving from the west coast where Pilates studios run rampant, I was surprised to hear about that in Western Michigan, the word “Pilates” conjures up the image of a slow and boring workout. Well… Allow me to dispel that myth!

In an effort to set the record straight, let’s get down to the nitty gritty…

 What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise that works the entire body, that incorporates a variety of moves that have the potential to be extremely effective and intense. Each exercise can be modified for beginners or made more challenging for the advanced Pilates experts in the group. Focusing on the breath and starting every motion with the core, Pilates creates both an awareness and an intensity that can sometimes be hard to find in other activities.

Here at Modifie (soon to be “BeYou”), we are anything but boring! Our “Twisted Core” Pilates classes move quickly, target a wide variety of muscle groups and are set to loud and fun music.

What are the benefits to Pilates?

People who are regular Pilates participants report that the exercise has great physical and mental benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Whole body workout
  • Adaptable to many fitness levels
  • Lengthens, strengthens and builds strength without the bulk (think long and lean)
  • Increases flexibility
  • Develops core strength
  • Improves posture
  • Increased awareness – focusing on the mind/body connection
  • Fun and challenging!

Prior to my first class, I was under the impression that Pilates was only for ballerinas (and I was about as far from a ballerina as you get). As a life long athlete, I was hooked after my first class!

Beat the Blizzard

Who isn’t inspired to workout when it’s sunny, warm and summer-like outside?? I know I can’t wait to toss on my kicks and get outside with balmy temps. Staying motivated seems relatively simple!

What happens when there are blizzard warnings and winter weather advisories? Well… You choose. You can hunker down indoors and wait for spring to knock on the door… or you can get creative and find ways to stay active.

Some of the instructors at Modifie provide short little videos for their clients. These are workouts you can do EVEN when the sun’s not shining (and in sub-zero temps). Today’s booty burning videos are from Jen. If you haven’t treated yourself to one of her Turbo Kick or Rock Hard 1000’s class, scoot this to the top of your priority list. She’s motivating, fun and will give you a run for your money!

Here’s to creating your own heat… your own sunny moments! Now get up… and get after it!!

Jump It Out…

Anyone else let loose this Christmas and down a few too many sugar cookies?

It’s time to kick it up a notch with some plyometrics and lunges. 1 minute for each exercise. Take breaks when needed. Example: Do 10 Tuck Jumps in a row. Take a breather then do 10 more.

Tuck jumps
Hurdler Jump
Lunge forward and back – switching legs halfway.
1 minute push-ups
1 minute sit-ups

REPEAT 4 times
Here you have yourself a 25 minute HIIT workout (High Intensity Interval Training)

Rock Hard…

Who says you need heavy equipment to get a killer workout? Grab a rock and a band.

Do each exercise for 2 minutes. Try to get 50 reps each. Between each exercise do 25 pushups! Repeat 2-3 times.

It’s Getting Cold Out There… And HOT IN HERE!


For those who live locally, you have most likely dusted off the winter boots, schlepped the coats out of the closet and are remembering what it is like to drive on those slippery roads. Yes… winter is lurking around the corner and it is getting chilly out there! It is not unusual to see the motivation to workout fall along with the changing temperature. Well… Have no fear! Coach Kandi and the Modifie team are getting ready to offer a whole new array of classes! I won’t spoil the surprise but there are some sizzling teasers being offered this month. 

Stacy, a well known Yogi in the G-Rap area, is turning up the heat and offering a wonderful class. I had the good fortune of attending this week – and boy, oh boy was I happy to be there! A great space, a very present and knowledgable instructor, a non-competitive environment and a fabulous workout – this was the best way to end the work day. 

Stay tuned for some new and exciting changes going down and Modifie! And… for those of you who don’t know what this winter thing is that we speak of here, come on over for a visit! It’s pretty magical! 🙂

Get Your Kick On!

Long gone are the days of kickboxing to a Billy Blank video in my cozy little bedroom. In recent years, my physical activities have been dominated by volleyball, running, swimming and biking. It has been many moons since I have incorporated a little kick into my workout. Well… no time like the present to mix things up a little! One of the newest additions to the Modifie lineup is Turbo Kick with Jen.

I showed up feeling pretty confident that I would have this workout down in a few minutes. After all, those hours I spent in front of my little TV with Mr. Blank in high school would be just like this class, right?

Wrong. After the first few minutes, I knew I had to leave my ego at the door. This fast moving class swiftly combines abs, arms, legs and booty to target all areas that I didn’t necessarily use during a long ride or run. Set to the tune of loud, upbeat music, instructor Jen’s energy and encouragement leave all class members feeling encouraged and motivated. Although it was my first class and there were many moments I found myself bobbing along a few steps behind, Jen reassured myself and a couple other Turbo Rookies that, after 3 or so classes, we will have this thing down, no sweat… or rather, lots of sweat.

What a great way to heat up on a Thursday morning and a great way to get out of the living room/out from behind a workout DVD. Nothing beats working hard together!  Another successful Modifie class and a great addition to the growing lineup of class offerings! Image
